The Sisters of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary

Welcome to the world of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary!

Dear brothers and sisters, united in prayer with Novalis and Living With Christ,
As part of the Union of Prayer initiative, we, the Sisters of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, unite with you throughout the month of May 2026, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, in a deep spiritual communion.

Our sisters, present in Quebec (Canada), the United States, and Central America, will carry your intentions during the recitation of the Rosary, as well as during the Liturgy of the Hours. In this Marian month, we invite you to entrust your intentions to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, through the intercession of Élisabeth Turgeon, apostle of youth.

Founded in 1874 in Rimouski, Quebec, the Sisters of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary have served education and evangelization for 150 years. In 2025, the community celebrated its 150th anniversary in thanksgiving for a history marked by fidelity, missionary boldness, and a deep commitment to young people and families.

History of the founder Élisabeth Turgeon

The Congregation was founded by Élisabeth Turgeon, a young educator driven by deep faith and a profound love for youth. Despite fragile health and many trials, she showed remarkable courage and unwavering trust in Providence. In 1874, at the request of Bishop Jean Langevin, the first Bishop of Rimouski, she responded to his call to come to his diocese and to form educators who would combine pedagogical rigor with evangelical compassion. In 1875, she founded a religious community dedicated to Christian education, particularly in rural and underserved areas. She died on August 17, 1881, at the age of 41, leaving behind a firmly established community. She was beatified on April 26, 2015, in Rimouski, in official recognition of the spiritual fruitfulness of her life and her educational work.

History of the Community

Since its founding, the Congregation has expanded throughout Quebec, especially in regions far from major urban centres, and later internationally. The Sisters established and led numerous schools and developed a variety of educational initiatives for young people, making a significant contribution to the human development of several generations.

Today, the Congregation is present in Quebec, the United States, and Central America, notably in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Peru. Faithful to its heritage, it continues to adapt and renew its mission in response to the contemporary needs of the Church and society.

Overview of the Charism and Activities of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary

“Called by God to reveal the tender and caring love of Jesus and Mary, his mother, the Sisters of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, in fidelity to Blessed Élisabeth Turgeon, their foundress, devote themselves primarily to Christian education, especially among the young.”

This charism is expressed through an educational and pastoral presence that seeks the integral formation of the person in their human, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions. Inspired by the Gospel, the Sisters favour an approach marked by attentive listening, closeness, and respect for the dignity of each person. Today, the mission is carried out in close collaboration with lay partners in various educational settings. Together, they accompany young people and families in their journey of faith while also serving those living in poverty. Through a presence that is attentive and fraternal, they bear witness to Christ’s compassion for every person. For the past 40 years, many lay people from different countries, associated with the Congregation, have lived out this charism concretely in their daily lives.
