May 28. Mary, Attentive Mother

Theological meaning

At Cana, Mary sees the need before it is even expressed. She teaches us an insightful attentiveness to others.

In the Bible

“They have no wine.” (John 2.3)

Meditation

To be attentive is not only to see what is obvious, but also to perceive what is lacking: the absence, what no one quite dares to say. At Cana, Mary notices a detail others might have missed. She does not impose herself or dramatize. She simply presents the need.

Prayer

Mary, awaken me to the hidden needs of those I meet.
