May 26. Mary, Mother of Hope

Theological meaning

Mary hoped against hope, standing in the shadow of the cross. She shows us that God keeps his promises.

In the Bible

“Hoping against hope.” (Romans 4.18)

Meditation

At the foot of the cross, Mary understands that promises can seem contradicted by reality. Yet, she remains there, faithful, sustained by a hope that rests not on the present moment, not on what she sees, but on God. With her, we learn that hope is not easy optimism, but a tenacious trust.

Prayer

Mary, sustain my hope when everything seems uncertain.
