May 12. Our Lady of Sorrows

Theological meaning

Mary experienced deep and piercing sorrow and faced it while remaining united to her Son. She is close to all who are going through trials.

In the Bible

“And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Luke 2.35)

Meditation

Let’s be clear: suffering is part of life. Even when we can identify its causes, its meaning often escapes us. Mary does not turn us away from it, but she shows us that it can be endured without losing trust. She remains standing at the foot of the cross. In our own trials, we can turn to her, since Mary understands, accompanies and sustains us.

Prayer

Mary, stay close to me in difficult moments.
